Artist Abdullah Qandeel’s live mural painting performance

The Heritage and Arts Forum
King Fahad Cultural Center, Riyadh
April 17- 22, 2016

Banafsajeel was a Gold Sponsor for the 2nd Heritage and Arts Forum that took place in King Fahad Cultural Center in Riyadh on April 17-22, 2016. Banafsajeel’s booth at the Forum featured the Saudi abstract expressionist Abdullah Qandeel in a live performance that shaped contemporary heritage through the medium of mural painting. Qandeel presented “Performing Heritage” over five days, with the resulting mural acquired by the Saudi Heritage Preservation society.

Abdullah Qandeel is an abstract expressionist painter born in Jeddah and painting since he was 4 years old. At 28 years today, his signature graphic shapes form in a spontaneous manner the moment his paintbrush meets the canvas, leading to sometimes chaotic, other times balanced structure and form. The symbols flow intuitively and ingeniously reflect a collective heritage linked to this region since ancient times. The acquisition of the resulting mural by the Saudi Heritage Preservation Society marked a lucky moment for Qandeel within the history of contemporary art in the Kingdom.

His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, President and Chairman of the Board of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), acknowledged and honored Banafsajeel Founder Noor Aldabbagh for participating in the Heritage and Arts Forum. Performing Heritage is Banafsajeel’s first project in Saudi Arabia under its 2016 theme of Flow.
