1,000 Shooting Stars
A meteor shower taking place for the first time has been predicted for this weekend of May 24-25, where up to a thousand shooting stars may be visible when it peaks tonight. The sky will light up and this exceptional meteor shower–“Camelopardalis” should result in an impressive display of shooting stars.
I’m in Riyadh this weekend preparing for the photography auction curated by Banafsajeel on June 3. I plan to stop by two dinners tonight and then watch the meteor shower from a friend’s rooftop. Whenever I’m back in Riyadh I try to catch up with as many friends as possible. This visit has been very productive. With hundreds of shooting stars, it seems like an opportune moment to launch the Banafsajeel website and hope for the best!
The name ‘banafsajeel’, by the way, depending on your how you read it in Arabic, combines the words ‘violet’ and ‘generation’ (بنفسجي- جيل) or translates into ‘in the breath of a generation’ (بنفس جيل). This name, ‘violet generation’ fits some creatives in this region. Their work has developed organically, sometimes unexpectedly, into something exceptional. It is not only nuanced and worthy of critical appraise from an artistic perspective, but can sometimes inspire social change or in certain cases, healing.
So, welcome to the Banafsajeel blog! I hope you enjoy getting to know some of the stars of the creative scene in the GCC over the coming months.
